To reduce sulphur emissions and comply with IMO regulations, thousands of vessels now operate Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), more commonly known as scrubbers. But there's something many people don't realise.
A scrubber doesn't just clean exhaust gases; it also has to prove it's cleaning them. This is where Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) come into play.
The analysers within these systems continuously monitor gases such as SO and CO. However, to ensure those readings remain accurate, the sensors must be regularly verified and calibrated using certified calibration gases. The calibration gas contains a known concentration of gas. When it is introduced to the analyser, the sensor's reading is compared against that certified value. If the reading is correct, the analyser is verified. If not, it is adjusted back into specification.
Without regular verification, there's no way to know whether the analyser is reporting accurate emissions data.
